Muse Privacy Policy
Last Updated: April 22, 2025
Our Privacy Mission
Muse is an AI-powered music technology company dedicated to protecting your privacy. We build creative tools that respect your personal data and give you control. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and share information when you use our services—including our Muse Max for Live plugin for Ableton Live and our future standalone Muse platform—and how we safeguard your data. Our mission is to empower musical creativity without compromising your trust or privacy.
In summary, we collect only what we need to provide and improve our services, we give you choices over your data, and we are transparent about our AI technology.
Information We Collect
We collect information about you to provide and enhance the Muse services. This includes information you provide directly, data collected automatically as you use our software or website, and information from third parties. Below is an overview of the types of data we collect and how we use it:
Category of Data | Examples | How We Use It |
---|---|---|
Contact and Account Information | Name, email address, account login credentials; any profile details you provide. | To set up and manage your account, provide customer support, and communicate with you about the service (e.g. important updates or features, or marketing with your consent). |
User Content | Text prompts or descriptions you input, musical data you upload (like MIDI clips), and the AI-generated music output (MIDI files) we return to you. | To generate the music or content you request via our AI, and to improve our algorithms. We may store your input and the resulting output briefly to ensure the service works and to refine our model. This content is only used for your requested generation and our service improvement. |
Usage Data | Information on how you interact with Muse: e.g. which features you use, session duration, error logs; device and technical data such as IP address, operating system, Ableton Live version, and browser type (for web features). | To operate and improve the functionality and performance of Muse, fix bugs, and analyze usage trends. This helps us make Muse more reliable and user-friendly, and maintain the security and integrity of our platform. Some of this data is collected via cookies or similar technologies on our website. |
Payment Information | Payment details you provide when making a purchase (e.g. cardholder name, payment card number, billing info). | To process transactions for premium features or subscriptions. Note: Muse uses a secure third-party payment processor to handle payments. Your sensitive payment information (like credit card numbers) is processed by them and not stored on our servers. |
Third-Party Integrations | Data from services you choose to connect to Muse (for example, logging in through a Google account or linking Muse with another music app). | To enable optional features or integrations at your request. We access and use this information only to provide the connected functionality you initiated (e.g. importing your data or sharing content) and only with your consent. |
We collect and use personal information only as necessary for the purposes described above. If we ever need to collect sensitive information or use your data for a new purpose, we will seek your permission or provide notice as required by law.
Cookies and Tracking
When you visit our website, we use "cookies" (small text files stored on your device) and similar technologies to remember your preferences, keep you logged in, and gather analytics about how you use our site. This helps us improve our services.
You can control or disable cookies through your browser settings. However, disabling cookies may cause some features of the Muse site or app (such as staying logged in) not to work properly.
Do Not Track: Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" (DNT) signal. Because there's no standard interpretation of DNT signals yet, our site currently does not respond to them. Global Privacy Control: If your browser uses a Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, we will treat it as an opt-out of any sale of personal information (even though we do not sell data) and as a request to limit data sharing where applicable by law.
How We Share Information
Muse only shares your personal data in a few specific situations, and always with safeguards in place. Situations where we may share information include:
- Service Providers: We use trusted third parties for services such as cloud hosting, analytics, email delivery, and payment processing. They receive only the information necessary to perform their functions and are obligated to protect your data and use it solely for our purposes.
- Business Transactions: If Muse undergoes a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, user information may be transferred to the new owner or partner as part of that transaction. If such a change happens, we will ensure your data remains protected and inform you of any significant changes or choices you may have.
- Legal Compliance: We may disclose your information if required by law or in response to a valid legal request (such as a court order or subpoena). We might also share data when necessary to enforce our terms and policies, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Muse, our users, or others (for example, to prevent fraud or security issues).
Importantly, we do not share your personal information with third-party advertisers or social media companies for their own marketing or targeted advertising purposes.
Data Security
We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access. This includes encrypting data during transmission (HTTPS), storing it on secure servers, and limiting access to personal data to authorized personnel.
However, no security measure is perfect. We cannot guarantee that your data will remain completely secure at all times. Help protect your account by using a strong, unique password and keeping it confidential.
Data Retention and Deletion
We retain personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this Policy (generally while your account is active or as required by law). If your account is inactive for a long period, we may delete or anonymize your data.
If you decide to delete your account or request that we delete your personal information, we will take action to remove or anonymize your data. We generally will complete deletions within about 30 days after we verify the request. We may retain certain information if necessary for legal obligations, resolving disputes, or enforcing our agreements, but will do so in compliance with privacy laws.
AI-Generated Output and Model Limitations
Muse uses advanced artificial intelligence models to generate music (MIDI sequences) based on your inputs. We want to be transparent about this process and its limitations:
Your Inputs and Outputs: When you provide a text prompt or other input, our servers process it to create the musical output. We may temporarily store your input and the generated output to complete the generation and to monitor or improve service quality. We treat this content as your private data. We do not use your specific inputs or outputs for any purpose outside of providing the service and improving our AI models, unless you give us permission.
User Ownership: You own the music outputs that Muse generates for you. We do not claim any copyright or ownership over the MIDI files or compositions you create using our service. They are your creations to use as you wish. (We do ask that you only input content you have the right to use in the first place.)
Model Limitations: While we continually improve our AI, it isn't perfect. The quality and accuracy of generated music can vary. Sometimes the output may not fit your prompt perfectly or might contain unusual elements. Additionally, AI models can inherit biases or quirks from their training data. We are committed to ethical AI development and have trained Muse on a carefully curated dataset to minimize problems. If we cannot fulfill your request, we will explain why.
California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have certain rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA):
- Right to Know: You can request to know what personal information we collect about you, how we use it, and with whom we share it.
- Right to Delete: You can request that we delete personal information we have collected from you (with certain exceptions allowed by law).
- Right to Correct: You can request that we correct inaccurate personal information about you.
- Right to Opt-Out of Sale/Sharing: You can direct us not to sell your personal information or share it for targeted advertising. (As noted, we do not sell personal data.)
- Right to Non-Discrimination: You have the right to not be treated differently for exercising any of these privacy rights.
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us as described in the "Contact Us" section below. We will verify your identity (for example, by confirming your email address or other information) and respond to your request within 45 days.
Note: In the past 12 months, we have collected and used personal information as described in this Policy. We have not sold or shared personal information under those laws, and we do not knowingly collect or sell information of consumers under 16 years of age.
European Privacy Rights (GDPR)
If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or a similar jurisdiction, you have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or local law. These include:
- Access: You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you (and ask for it in a portable format).
- Rectification: You can ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete personal data.
- Erasure: You can request that we delete your personal data, under certain conditions (for example, when the data is no longer needed for the purposes it was collected).
- Restriction: You can request that we limit the processing of your data in certain situations (like while a complaint or request is being resolved).
- Objection: You can object to certain processing, such as processing for direct marketing or when we process data based on legitimate interests.
- Withdrawal of Consent: If we rely on your consent for any processing, you can withdraw that consent at any time.
To exercise your GDPR rights, please contact us (see "Contact Us" below). We will respond to your request as required by law, typically within one month. These rights may be subject to conditions or limitations (for instance, we might retain certain data if required by law or to protect others' rights). If we cannot fulfill your request, we will explain why.
International Data Transfers: Muse is based in the United States, so if you use our services from outside the U.S., your data will likely be transferred to and processed in the U.S. We will take appropriate measures to protect your personal data during such transfers, such as using standard contractual clauses or other legally recognized safeguards to ensure your data rights are respected.
Complaints: If you have concerns about how we handle your data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. We would appreciate the chance to address your concerns first, so please feel free to contact us with any issues.
Data Portability and Interoperability
As we evolve Muse into a full-fledged music platform, we are planning features to ensure you can easily move your data and creative work to and from our service:
- Exporting Your Music: You will always be able to export the music you create with Muse. We support standard formats (like MIDI files, audio stems, etc.) so that you can use your Muse-generated content in other DAWs or music software without hassle.
- Downloading Your Data: We intend to provide tools for you to download your personal data (e.g. account info, settings, prompt history) in a machine-readable format, giving you a copy of your information for your own use.
- Integrations with Other Services: We plan to enable optional integrations to let Muse work with other music tools or platforms. Any such integration will only occur with your permission and will clearly explain what data is exchanged.
As we introduce these data portability and integration features, we will update this Privacy Policy and inform users of any new data practices.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Muse grows or as laws change. If we make significant changes, we will notify you by posting an update on our website or within the app, and updating the "Last Updated" date above. In some cases, we might also send you an email notification.
